6G vs. the Military
6G will merge communications, AI, and environmental mapping into a single fabric. Defense must adapt or be exposed.
Good morning,
Over the past few years, conversations about 6G — the sixth generation of mobile communications technology and successor to 5G — have quieted down considerably.
It seemed that hype was building until about 2020, and then… nothing.
Maybe it was fatigue from being overpromised and underdelivered. Maybe it was hard to conceptualize more than incremental improvements.
But, today, we’re at a bit of a turning point where the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) consortiums are starting to lock-in the standards that we can expect to see for 6G wireless communications, which will begin deploying around 2030. That means we’re less than five years from deployment of the tech.
And, we’re so not ready for it from a defense perspective.
